Inspirational Fiction

What does that mean, "Inspirational Fiction"? To me fiction is inspirational if in some way it causes me to think and examine my life. If when I finish a novel or a story, I feel that I have not only been entertained but have also been given a new perspective or been enlightened in some way, I feel doubly rewarded. Some novels are classics, and will inspire for generations, others are more time based and will only touch a certain group of people. These fictional works are chosen from books I have recently read that I have found not only entertaining, but also inspirational. I hope you do, too.

Books edited by Sandra Haldeman Martz
Sandra Haldeman Martz is the founder-publisher of Papier-Mache Press and the editor of this bestselling anthology series. I picked up my first of this series, (When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple) when I was feeling a little glum about turning 40. Since I enjoyed it immensely, I bought the others. A strange thing has happened since then, my copies of all of the books keep disappearing to friends who pick it up when visiting and can't seem to put them down!

In a society that glorifies youth, this book tell us that not only is it ok to grow older but its wonderful! If I Had My Life to Live Over I Would Pick More Daisies
Another anthology of poems, stories, and images, but this time the focus is on women's choices that have become pivotal points in their life. It seems only in retrospect can one really find out what the defining moments in our lives are. The choices that the women in these selections made and how they made them, gave me some insight into the choices in my own life. I actually liked this second book better than Sandra Haldeman Martz's first anthology. Also in audio cassette

Books by Barbara Kingsolver
I read my first book by Barbara Kingsolver because she was from my home town, Tucson, Arizona. Within a week I read two more of here novels, and now I am hooked. Barbara Kingsolver has marvelous characters, powerful stories, and fantastic descriptions of the desert I love. Good light reading with enough thought provoking insight to be considered inspirational. UPDATE! SHE'S DONE IT AGAIN! SEE POISONWOOD BIBLE!

Pigs In Heaven
The thing I liked best about this book is the wonderful multidimensional characters. There is no character that is totally good or totally bad; all the characters are curious mixtures of both, --each totally believable, but unlike any one you've ever met. The story is a powerful one involving an Indian tribe and its traditions and a mother's love. The twists and turns of plot make it a great read.

Animal Dreams
This was my favorite of Kingsolver's books. To me, the book is about relationships-- with parents, sister, and lovers, and how they affect our life . Codi, the main character struggled with them all. Codi, confused about what direction her life should be going, ends up in the town of her birth, where she begins to put the pieces of her life together. Sad, thought provoking, and entertaining.

The Bean Trees
This book is the prequel to Pigs In Heaven. It is about humor, trust, and faith without which, it is at times impossible to survive. We realize that the main character, Taylor is truly making the best out of what she has and wants the best for both herself and her little girl Turtle. Everyday, she looks toward hope, and she knows she will someday find what is right and good.

The Poisonwood Bible
Barbara Kingsolver's new book is her masterpiece. A departure from her previous work, this novel centers around a missionary and his family in colonial Africa. Kingsolver has said that she has been working on this novel for years- and it shows. The book is narrated from the point of view of the mother and wife of the missionary and her four very different daughters. Each character brings another point of view about their life in Africa, and their feelings about not only the natives, but also about the impact of their religion and culture on the people they have come to serve. Incredibly interesting historical references, but more than that this book is about the consequences of our narrowminded prejudices. This is a great and unforgettable book!

Books by Wally Lamb
Both books by Wally Lamb are powerful and emotionally gripping. They are not light-hearted or easy reads. But if you are not afraid to deal with emotional issues, you will enjoy them both. They were both recommended by Oprah.

She's Come Undone
This book was almost painful for me to read at first. The issues that the main character had about self-esteem and weight were very familiar to me, and brought back unpleasant memories of my own struggles as a youth. This book is a journey of young woman from adolescence through her thirties, as she battles her demons and finally learns to like and respect herself. Very, very powerful.

I Know This Much Is True
Wally Lamb's newest book. I am right in the middle of this long book and I like it so far, but because I am not quite done with it I am giving you Amazon's review:
What if you were a 40-year-old housepainter, horrifically abused, emotionally unavailable, and your identical twin was a paranoid schizophrenic who believed in public self-mutilation? You'd either be a guest on the Jerry Springer Show or Dominick Birdsey, the antihero, narrator, and bad-juju magnet of I Know This Much Is True. This is an honest, moving account of one man's search, denial, and acceptance of self. Note from webmaster: Caution, this book can be disturbing to some readers.

Books by Maya Angelou
I actually read both these books a long time ago when I was quite young. After my daughter discovered them recently, I reread them both. If you haven't read any of Maya Angelou or you haven't recently, you are in for a treat.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Maya Angelou's autobiographical account of her life is a masterpiece of the human experience. Beautifully written, her story is at once painfully individual and universal. Though sad at times, I Know Why the Caged Bird sings is a story of hope and self awareness. This book is a classic--if you haven't read it you should. .

Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas
Maya Angelou continues her autobiography as she becomes an entertainer, wife and mother. In this book she deals with her failed marriage to a white man, the ups and diowns of her career, and her relationship with her son. Maya Angelou has written about her conflicts, mistakes, pain, and joy in a way that has us identifying and feeling her experiences. Although she writes prose, it feels like poetry it is so beautiful and moving. A must read.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupury
Nancy Albright suggested this old favorite. She writes: As children, this was required reading. As adults, the simple things in life are best, but often forgotten. Albeit small, this book will remind you and your soul of the wonders of innocence. Meant for enjoying and definitely for sharing. What a great Christmas gift to a young child!
